OS Apps: GCP Custom UI, Ripasso and PixelTools

A fun mixed bag of goodness

Today we’ll look at a few interesting apps that have been on my list: GCP Custom UI, Ripasso password manager and PixelTools. The first two are open-source but the last is a free to use SaaS suite based on Open-Source frameworks so I’m including it. Let’s start with the powerful GCP Custom UI written by a fellow GDE Aliane Abdelouahab GCP Custom UI Aliane in the GDE community has been busy working on this “gcp-custom-ui” app for some time. They would get excited and post updates and even take feature requests. I decided it had grown big enough it was worth a deep dive just on its own.

Ratatui with a bit of Argon

We last looked at Ratatui and VCR back in July. I recently had a need for VCR and it reminded me that Ratatui was something I demo’ed but never really tried to use. With Google Gemini 4 Argon releasing today, I thought this might be a fine opportunity to test it with some new and rust based. I’m not just going to make a TUI that does nothing. Instead, I’ll be pairing this with a demo I’ll be giving down in Rochester MN for the Code and Connect night.

Ratatui (and VHS)

Ratatui (and VHS)

A Rust based TUI

Of all places, I found Ratatui from a post on Threads. It’s basically a really light fast Rust-based Terminal User Interface (TUI). It has some VHS examples as well. I haven’t used VHS before so let’s see what that is about as we build out our own TUI using the framework with Google Antigravity. Ratatui Let’s start by cloning the GIT repo I realized my local rust environment was way out of date $ cargo version cargo 1.74.0 (ecb9851af 2023-10-18) so i did a brew install rust to update it to current.
